The Project
Traces of Portugal explores the global legacy of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries through a modern lens. The project is a journey into history, culture, and architecture, uncovering the marks left by centuries of Portuguese presence across continents, from former colonies to global trade posts.
The inspiration for this project comes from my own experience growing up in Portugal. I learned stories of great navigators, remarkable explorers, and the accomplishments of a small nation that reached far beyond its borders. Those achievements remain impressive and fascinating. Yet history is never one-sided. While Portugal expanded its reach and built an empire, there were people on the other side whose experiences and perspectives were often very different.
I am not a historian, nor an expert on the Age of Discoveries. This project is driven by curiosity rather than authority, by a fascination with what was accomplished and a concern for how it unfolded. Traces of Portugal seeks to explore both perspectives, embracing complexity and questioning inherited narratives in search of a more balanced understanding.
Beyond the historical footprint, the project also explores the living culture that remains today. Through travel, photography, and close attention to Portuguese architecture, from preserved monuments to forgotten ruins, the blog connects past and present, revealing how history continues to shape places, traditions, and everyday life around the world.
Whether you are drawn by history, travel, architecture, or cultural exchange, Traces of Portugal invites you to follow these traces, discover enduring connections, and engage thoughtfully with Portugal’s global legacy.
